Coffee is one of the most consumed beverages in the world. To most people, it is the first thing to take in the morning before starting the day. If you own a Nespresso and it is blinking orange, it can be frustrating to identify and fix the issue before the morning brew.
Your Nespresso machine may be blinking orange to indicate different technical issues. Whether it is a Nespresso Next or Vertuo, the reasons behind this error are similar and that means the solutions are pretty much the same.
Why is my Nespresso coffee machine blinking orange?
The Nespresso coffee machine is inbuilt with special light-based indicators that alert the owner when experiencing a technical issue.
The orange light-based indicator is found in Nespresso Vertuo Next, Vertuo, and Evoluo. We shall explain some of these issues and the solutions to them.
The orange light might mean different things depending on the way it is flashing.
The Orange light is flashing three times
When the orange light is flashing three times per second or continuously, the coffee machine requires descaling.
Descaling is thoroughly cleaning the coffee machine, including its reservoir. It is recommended that you descale the Nespresso machine after every three to six months.
You should have the Nespresso descaling kit to thoroughly clean the coffee grounds and limescale deposits in the reservoir.
Below are the steps to descale a Nespresso coffee machine:
- Unplug the coffee machine from the mains power supply and let it rest for three minutes then plug it back.
- Open the machine’s lid and eject any used capsule. Ensure that the lid is closed and the knob is in the unlocked position.
- Eject and empty the capsule tank, drip tray, water reservoir, and cup support. Rinse them all before reassembling them back in the machine.
- You can prepare a descaling solution by pouring half a liter of clean water and Nespresso descaling solution into the water tank.
- Put the machine in lock mode and turn it on by pressing the top button. Unlock the machine and then close it. When the machine is preheating, the button will flash for a few seconds before turning solid.
- Press and hold the button for seven seconds to enter the descaling mode. You have 45 seconds to begin the descaling procedure.
- Place a large cup under the coffee spout to collect the machine’s content.
- Lock the Nespresso machine and press the ON button. When the first descaling process is complete, the machine will automatically stop. During the entire process, the orange light will blink rapidly and continuously.
- Empty and clean the water tank, drip tray, and capsule container.
- Pour fresh water into the water tank. Reinstall the water tank, drip tray, and capsule container to the machine and repeat the descaling process.
- Once the button stops blinking quickly and becomes steady, the descaling process is complete. Let the machine dry for ten minutes before brewing coffee. Pour the rinsing water, refill the water tank with fresh water and reattach it to the machine to start brewing.
If the Nespresso coffee maker is still blinking an orange light after descaling, contact the Nespresso customer service for further assistance.
The orange light is blinking twice
When the Nespresso Vertuo is blinking an orange light two times per second, it means that it requires cleaning. The machine’s capsules may be blocked and require to be cleaned.
Below are the steps to follow when cleaning the Nespresso coffee machine:
- Open the coffee machine’s head and remove used capsules.
- With a moist paper towel, clean the machine’s parts and the areas around the ejected capsules.
- Empty the reservoir, rinse it, and then fill it with fresh water.
- Rinse the cup holder and place a large mug under the coffee spout.
- Empty the capsule container and clean it with tap water. Close the head into the locked position by pushing the lever to the far left.
- Begin the cleaning cycle by pressing and holding the button. The orange light will flash as water flows out for two minutes.
- Rinse the reservoir and repeat step 6 three times.
Suppose the orange indicator keeps blinking, press and hold the button for seven minutes. If it persists, you should run the descaling procedure before contacting the Nespresso customer service.
