Whirlpool Duet dryer is not spinning but makes a humming sound

When the Whirlpool Duet dryer is making a humming sound but not spinning, the issue is mostly because the drive belt is broken or worn out. However, that’s not the only probable cause.

There are a number of reasons why the Whirlpool Duet Dryer is not spinning, which will be explained in this article. We will also highlight how you can solve those problems by yourself using readily available tools.

Reasons why your Whirlpool Duet steam dryer is not spinning and how to fix

There are a number of technical reasons why your dryer is not working. Some of them are easily resolved while others may require assistance from a professional. Here is a list of issues and how you can fix them.

1. The drive belt may be broken

There is a chance that the drive belt is broken because of excess friction and movement. These two factors can lead to tearing or breaking after some time, if not detected early. As a result, the Whirlpool Duet dryer will not spin.

To troubleshoot this problem, you need to analyze the drive belt. You can do so by turning the dryer drum using your hand.  A normal functioning drum will resist turning.

If it loosely spins, it is most likely that the drive belt is broken and needs a replacement. The instructions on how to replace the drive belt are listed below:

  • Make sure that the dryer is disconnected from the power supply.
  • Open the dryer’s back panel and cut any excess fabric from the sides that are linked to the drum axle.
  • Unscrew the four screws retaining the brackets responsible for holding clamps that hold the belt tightly.
  • Remove the two screws holding the drum axle and lift it upwards so that the drive belt can fall out.
  • Tightly fix the new drive belt onto the drum axle before you screw the clamps down.
  • Reassemble all the internal parts back into the dryer and switch on the machine to see if it works.

If this does not work, contact your repair technician for assistance. Their services cost around $200 while a new drive belt goes for $20.

2. Whirlpool dryer is not spinning but the belt is not broken

You have analyzed the belt and discovered that it is in good condition, but the Whirlpool is still not spinning. The reason is that the idler pulley may have overloaded.

The pulley produces tension between the drive belt and may stop working because of too much friction from overloaded clothes. Check whether the idle pulley is crooked, broken, or not easily spinning and if so, replace it with a new pulley.

3. Whirlpool front load dryer is not spinning

Your Whirlpool front load dryer is not spinning because the drum rollers are not working. They may be blocked by lint or fabric. To find out whether the drum support rollers are worn out, you first need to remove the dryer belt.

If the drum does not rotate without the dryer belt, then one or more rollers are worn out and need replacement. Once the drum rollers are replaced, you can reuse the roller shaft if it is in good condition. Make sure that the shaft is thoroughly cleaned before fixing the new rollers.

4. Drive motor overheating

The drive motor, which turns the drum, may also malfunction due to overheating. It is therefore recommended that you unplug the dryer from the power source and let it cool for some time. If a burning smell emits from the machine, contact a repair technician for service.
